Runner-Up Best Lightweight: Montbell Superior Down Parka — Men’s & Women’s

For a little less sticker shock than the Ghost Whisperer, you can have a (near) equally high-performance puffy. Plenty of warmth without the bulk, the Montbell Superior Down Parka works almost as well stuffed in a pack as it does when you wear it.

Unlike the Ghost Whisperer, however, the Superior Down Parka adds a fully adjustable hood and some interior stash pockets. Its 10-denier ripstop shell won’t stand up to gnarly snags, but it will repel some light abrasion. Overall, it’s a very capable down layer that’s great for reliable warmth and easy to stuff in your pack just in case. Plus, with an MSRP of just over $200, it’s a coat most folks can afford to stuff in their pack.

A bomber down jacket that has all the nessasary features at a good price

The MontBell Superior Down is jam-packed with features and is a great basic, do-all hooded down jacket for those not looking to spend too much money. Zippered handwarmer pockets, Fully adjustable hood, interior stash pockets, adjustable hem, 800 fill-power down; we can go on and on. While the finished product has less of a "polished" design than some other high-end options, the Superior has a higher performance to cost ratio. For these reasons, we fabulous to name it a Best Buy. There are cheaper jackets in our test, but if you want a fully functional down hoody with a higher fill power, you need to take a close look at this great jacket.

Best Down Jackets for Backpacking of 2020

Reviewed in February, 2020

The MontBell Superior Down Parka is one of the best values for a down jacket—$200 for an 800 fill-power down jacket with hood and pockets that weighs 7.7 oz. Basically, it’s the Ghost Whisperer, but more than $100 cheaper. The square baffles keep the down in place, and the high collar protects from drafts. I’ve also have the MontBell Plasma Jacket, which is lighter and more expensive, but the Superior Down Parka is more versatile. –Megan McGowan

Light Puffy Jacket

A puffy jacket is an essential piece of clothing for every CDT hiker: While the trail is exposed to the sun during the day, nights can be cold. I like the Montbell Superior Down Parka, which offers a good balance of warmth to weight in an 8.7-ounce package.

Top Gear for Hiking and Biking : Superior Down Parka

Review Date: September 2015

There are tons of insulated jackets out there, so how to choose just one for hiking and backpacking trips this fall? Weighing in at just 8.7 ounces and beefed up with lofty 800-fill Power Goose Down, this puffy topped our test. It’s light and compactible enough to hide away in your pack, but offers up all the warmth you need when things get chilly.
