Gear Review: Down Sleeping Wrap #2 Long

Reviewed in August, 2020

Joan borrowed my Montbell Sleeping Wrap one time…and used it on the solo backpacking trips since then! And even used it one weekend when I tried out a lightweight synthetic quilt that I futzed with too much. If Joan likes it, finds it (crucially!) warm enough without making her too warm, and has no trouble sleeping in it, I know it is a well-designed product.

As you’d expect from the full name of the product, The Montbell Sleeping Wrap #2 Long is well, on the long side, as it can fit someone up to 6’6″ (198 cm) tall. Though I am only 5’6″, I found this longer length awesome for a quilt despite my initial skepticism due to my height. I can wrap it over me for more warmth and still have a space for my face without putting condensation into the quilt. This quilt compares favorably to other quilts in terms of weight that have a similar down fill, length, and width but with a lot of versatility due to the design. Joan is a few inches taller than me at 5’10” but found the extra length a plus for similar reasons.

Montbell Athlete Heather "Anish" Anderson Review and Recommendations

I’ve never been a quilt user. Or a tarp user. Yes, I know that ultralight, thru-hiker types are supposed to eschew the extra ounces of a tent and bag. I don’t (there, I said it!). I’ve never enjoyed sharing my sleeping space with bugs and I’ve always rolled around too much to find sleeping in a quilt feasible. However, the Down Sleeping Wrap from Montbell has changed my mind, at least on the quilt. I found that even an active sleeper like me had plenty of coverage to stay cozy throughout the night. The strap system kept the quilt anchored in place despite my movements. I was pleased to be able to stick feet or arms out easily when I needed to cool off. There were also zero panic moments revolving around waking up suffocating with the hood of the bag over my face, which happens often to me in conventional mummy styles. However, I haven’t yet tested it on very cold nights, so it remains to be seen whether I’d notice drafts when the temperature drops. I do appreciate the smaller compressed size and the lower weight for a quilt designed for 25 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it an attractive choice for lightening your base weight without compromising comfort and warmth.
