About the Store
To celebrate the 30 year anniversary of Montbell in 2005, the very first European store was opened in Switzerland at the foot of the Eiger. In 1969, CEO and founder of Montbell Isamu Tatsuno fulfilled his childhood dream and climbed the north face of the Eiger. It was on this climb that Tatsuno would become inspired to make outdoor equipment based on the concept of “Light and Fast.”
Located in the scenic town of Grindelwald, a peaceful resort town surrounded by the mountains of Swiss Alps, Montbell serves a wide variety of our latest products, technical outdoor clothing, down jackets, travel wear and accessories, backpacks, sleeping bags, and more. The store also exhibits the historical artifacts from Tatsuno’s climb of the Eiger and also the door from the original Mittellegi Hut from the Eiger’s East Ridge.

The Plasma 1000 Alpine Down Parka represents the lightest mid-weight insulated layer available today. Made with some of the world’s thinnest nylon, 1000 fill power goose down, and gram shaving construction techniques this garment challenges the limited definition of Ultra Light kit.Fully functional in 3 seasons we see the Plasma 1000 Alpine offering as the ultimate “warmth to weight ratio” performer for the ultra light backpacking crowd, but just as useful during done in a day winter treks, ski mountaineering missions, or the occasional group snowshoe outing.
Based on the success of the Plasma 1000 Down Jacket, this vest takes it to another level. Straight forward core insulation, this piece utilizes only the finest 1000 fill power goose down and gossamer 7-denier nylon. This item has the same cut trim to work more effectively with outer layers.
This ultra light model uses lightweight 10-denier fabric and a shorter rib length to get even lighter and more compact.
By adopting a classic tailor's trick and paring it with only the best materials available MontBell has brought extreme comfort and thermal efficiency to the ultralight world. We found that integrating a woven fabric "cut on the bias" and orienting the fabric's warp and weft threads at 45 degrees to most major seam lines the sleeping bag becomes more fluid in nature. To create an even more comfortable system we utilize an elasticized thread in the stitch to create small "gathers" in the quilting. Through the combination of strategic seam orientation and the stretch provided by gathered quilting we offer unrivaled fit and comfort. These innovations allow the sleeping bag to move with you as you change positions throughout the night, drawing the premium 900 fill goose down closer to your body and eliminating drafty dead spaces. Keep body heat inside your sleeping bag, where it belongs. *Backpacker Editors' Choice Award 2014
