Sleeping Bag Guide

Here at Montbell we want to match you with outdoor gear and apparel that will allow you to make adventure memories to last a lifetime! To help make that happen we’ve put together this guide to walk you through our diverse sleeping bag offerings and arm you with the knowledge necessary to pick a bag that’s going to meet your needs right off the bat. So…

Step 1: Select your temperature range

Montbell sleeping bags come in six different temperature ratings which we label as EXP, 0, 1, 2, 3 and 5.

We use the ISO standard:

To help you find the right range of warmth for your next overnight, we provide both the ISO “comfort” and “limit” temperature ratings on each of our sleeping bags. ISO temperature ratings are independently tested by a third-party laboratory, offering you a way to make direct comparisons between bags across brands and manufacturers that test their bags using the ISO standard.

The meaning of “comfort” and “limit”:

As a general rule of thumb, most people (even those who tend to run a little cold) should be able to sleep comfortably wearing a base layer at the listed “comfort” temperature. The “limit” temperature represents the temperature at which even a person who runs hot would find it challenging to make it through the night comfortably.

Choose conservatively:

In order to account for the multitude of factors that can influence your sleeping experience, including unexpected weather or a rough day on the trail, we recommend selecting a sleeping bag that is one or two numbers lower than the coldest conditions you anticipate using your bag in. For example: if you’re an individual with a rapid metabolism looking to sleep out in temperatures no colder than 32˚F, a #3 may seem enticing. However, we recommend selecting a #2 or #1 to give yourself a comfort buffer should unforeseen circumstances arise in the backcountry.

Step 2: Choose your desired weight and compressibility

Our down sleeping bags come in three weight/compressibility levels, and we also offer bags with synthetic insulation, allowing our lineup to suit the needs of hardened alpinists, weekend campers and everyone in between:

1. Seamless Down Hugger 800 bags are a perfect lightweight choice for any adventure.

Our Seamless 800s are the sleeping bags we recommend to all users. They have an extremely high warmth-to-weight ratio which makes them exceptionally versatile for any adventure in the outdoors. Made with high-quality 800 Fill Power EX Down, the seamless design allows the down to loft to its fullest potential. They’re light and compressible, unfurling to provide comfort and a good night’s rest while backpacking, bikepacking, camping and anything else you can imagine.

2. Seamless Down Hugger WR 900 bags combine super lofty down with a weatherproof face fabric.

For users that need an ultralight, super compact and weatherproof sleeping bag, our Seamless WR 900s are purposely built for U.L. hiking, alpinism and weight-sensitive missions into the wild. Ultra high-quality 900 Fill Power EX Down is utilized with state-of-the-art construction to create a superbly compressible bag to minimize the heft of your load while saving precious space inside your pack for other essentials. Extremely weatherproof GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER® outer fabric is seam-sealed to protect the down from external sources of moisture, while still allowing internal moisture and heat to vent out of the bag.

3. Down Hugger 650 bags are competitively lightweight and compressible, with an added emphasis on comfort.

If you’re focused on comfort in addition to weight and packability, the Down Hugger 650s are the way to go. While comparatively heavier and less compressible than the Seamless 800s and 900s, they still provide competitive performance that excels on the trail or while camping. This all comes at a lower cost, with additional comfort features detailed below.

4. SEAMLESS BURROW BAGS ARE made with our proprietary synthetic Exceloft insulation.

If the potential for moisture has you worried, or if you are looking for a durable, and easy to care for sleeping bag, a synthetic insulated sleeping bag is a great option. Our Burrow Bags also offer an exceptional value for their weight and size. Our seamless design has effectively cut weight and bulk to produce our lightest and smallest synthetic insulated option ever.

Step 3: Select your desired features and configuration

The super spiral stretch system is featured in all our sleeping bags

Looking for luxurious comfort? Ever wonder why Montbell sleeping bags are called "Down Huggers?" The Super Spiral Stretch System uses fabric orientated diagonally and stitched with elastic thread to maximize sideways stretch. As you move around in a sleeping bag featuring the Super Spiral Stretch System, the fabric shrinks back down to gently "hug" you, following the body's movements as you sleep, providing unrestricted comfort. The Seamless Burrow Bags and Seamless Down Hugger 800s and 900s feature this system on the interior of the bag to allow the down to loft to its maximum potential. The Down Hugger 650s feature this system on the interior and exterior, resulting in a sleeping bag that stretches and moves with you as you sleeping, providing unrivaled comfort.

Baffleless Construction

By eliminating the baffles in our Seamless Down Hugger models, we've created a continuous chamber that allows down to loft to its fullest potential. However, eliminating baffles means that down is able to freely shift inside the bag. The solution? Our proprietary Spider Yarn creates a web inside that bag that is able to trap and hold down in place, suspending a layer of down throughout the bag. We call this new construction the "Spider Baffle System."

Seamless Down Hugger WR 900 bags feature a weather resistant material.

If you’re looking for a top-of-the-line sleeping bag with weather-resistant capabilities for missions in wet, moist and otherwise unpredictable conditions, Seamless WR 900 bags are for you. Made with the same premium GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER® technology found in our Versalite and Permafrost series jackets, the Seamless WR 900s are seam-taped and ready for moist conditions that would compromise lesser bags.

All our sleeping bags come in two lengths: Regular and long.

We want everyone to experience the supreme comfort of our sleeping bags. Whether you’re of average height or are tall enough to be in the NBA, our sleeping bag lengths cover almost everyone.

Seamless Down Hugger 800s, Seamless Burrow Bags and Down Hugger 650s come in left and right-handed zipper options.

Are you a side-sleeper? Have you always wanted to have a pair of sleeping bags that you could zip together and share a night under the stars with someone special? We offer our Seamless Down Hugger 800s, Seamless Burrow Bags and Down Hugger 650s in left and right-handed variants for these very reasons. We’ve even ensured that the zippers of regular and long variants are complimentary so they can be combined just as easily as two bags of the same length.
